Butterflies Battling In My Belly
Right before I was about to teach a large group of people about emotions and how to allow them, I noticed myself getting nervous. The irony seemed comical to me. Here I was about to teach people what to do with uncomfortable emotions and I was thrust into an actual opportunity to practice what I preach. So this is what I did. 1. Name it. I said to myself, “Looks like you're nervous.”
2. Relax into it. My brain tried to tell me now was not the time to be nervous. I saw myself tensing up and trying to resist what I was feeling. Instead, I took a deep breath and opened up to it. Of course I was nervous and that’s ok.
3. Find it in your body. I scanned my body from head to toe. I noticed I was really warm (that is a big deal for me, I am always cold) and something was going on in my belly.
4. Describe it. I focused on the sensation in my belly. There was a swarm of battling butterflies trapped in an area about the size of a grapefruit. A dynamic ball of oranges and browns fluttering about.
When it was time to present, I told nervous it could come along for the presentation, but it would have to sit in the audience.
