What Did You Savor Today?

My husband gifted me the perfect package all tied up with a bow.  The bow was made of blue baker's twine and the box was from my favorite bakery in Boston, Mike's Pastries. As I opened the box, I was giddy with anticipation.  There it was, a pristine peanut butter cannoli.  When the subtle nutty flavor hit my taste buds, there was a chorus of angels rejoicing in my mouth.  The crisp pastry flaked off onto my tongue as I experienced the marriage of flavors.  What made the cannoli even more amazing is that my husband doesn't like cannolis, especially not the peanut butter kind.  He selected this delicacy with me in mind.   There is something magical about slowing down and savoring an experience.

Fraulein Maria, from my favorite musical, The Sound Of Music,  was on to something when she sang of "girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes".  What if we savored the little things in life: the colorful leaves crunching under your feet, a belly laugh with a girlfriend, a bear hug from a loved one, enjoying a meme with your teenager, snuggling a friend's 11 day old newborn, that 3 minute period where your kids are not fighting, or an uninterrupted hot shower.  Even if it is short lived there is something powerful about being completely present and enjoying what is going on around you.  Find at least one thing to savor each day and your life will get more delicious.
